What are the pros and cons of the digital nomad lifestyle?
In the video below, I talk about our experience with Una as digital nomads since 2013 – I’ve seen people succeeding as digital nomads and achieving a sustainable digital nomad lifestyle, and also many quitting or struggling.
It’s not an easy lifestyle choice but very rewarding if you do find your way.
Pros and Cons of Digital Nomad Lifestyle
Here’s a short version of the pros and cons of the nomad lifestyle.
Let’s start with the pros of the digital nomad lifestyle.
1. Travel
Travel is amazing.
As a digital nomad, you get to see so much more and so much deeper if you choose so. This kind of lifestyle gives you freedom that gives you a lot of opportunities.
2. More Travel
When you are based in let’s say Bangkok, or staying long-term in Taipei, there are so many more travel opportunities (easy and cheap) that you just don’t have when you are living in, let’s say, London, New York, or Riga.
Choose places that are close to other places that you are willing to visit.
You’ll be happy to have this opportunity later.
3. You Will Grow
You will grow even if you fail, give up, or realize that you don’t like being a nomad.
Every new experience widens the horizon.
If you succeed, you’ll grow a lot.
4. You Can Live Better and Save Money
If you are a nomad, you can choose to spend time in places that offer better quality of life and/or better value for your money.
Not having been tied to one location is amazing.
There Are Also Downsides to Digital Nomad Lifestyle
It can be very lonely to be a full-time traveler.
You will miss out on things back home.
You will lose relationships back home.
You will need to change.
It can be hard. Traveling while working is hard, and can also be super hard at times. Also, travel may suck when you have responsibilities and have to work instead of enjoying that amazing place where you are right now.
It’s not a lifestyle for everyone.
But it’s surely a rewarding lifestyle if you do find your way and grow to fully embrace it. If you do succeed in achieving a sustainable digital nomad lifestyle.
